Eric J. Magnuson was a justice on the Minnesota Supreme Court. He was appointed to this position on June 2, 2008 by Gov. Tim Pawlenty, a Republican. Magnuson retired from the court on June 30, 2010 to return to the private practice of law. [1][2][3]

Education

Justice Magnuson earned his B.A. Degree in history from the University of Minnesota. he received his J.D. from William Mitchell College of Law, graduating cum laude.

Legal career

Prior to joining the supreme court, Magnuson was a law clerk to former Minnesota Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert Sheran from 1976 until 1977. He was an attorney and Partner with the Rider Bennett law firm, in Minneapolis from 1977-2007 and an attorney and shareholder at Briggs and Morgan in Minneapolis, specializing in appellate law. Justice Magnuson was appointed by Governor Tim Pawlenty to be chair of the Commission on Judicial Selection in 2003. He served in that role until 2008. [4]

Judicial Selection

Justice Magnuson prefers a system of selecting judges contrary to the non-partisan election system that Minnesota employs. Justice Magnuson suggests that Minnesota is at risk of having "negative and expensive" elections.[5]
