Ernest Tidwell

Ernest Tidwell is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. He joined the court in 1979 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter. Tidwell is a judge serving on senior status.[1]

Education

Tidwell graduated from Emory Law with his Bachelor of Laws degree in 1954[1].

Legal career

Tidwell was a private practice attorney licensed in the State of Georgia from 1954 to 1966 and in addition to his private practice work, was a legal aide to the House Floor Leader Georgia House of Representatives from 1964 to 1966 and was Associate general counsel to the State Bar of Georgia from 1965 to 1966. Tidwell was also an Executive Assistant Attorney General in the Georgia Attorney General's Office from 1966 to 1968 before becoming a Civil Court Judge in Fulton County from 1968 to 1971 then became a Superior Court Judge in Fulton County from 1971 to 1979[1].

Federal judicial career

Tidwell was nominated by Jimmy Carter on June 5, 1979, to a new seat created by 92 Stat. 1629 which was approved by Congress. Tidwell was confirmed by the US Senate on July 23, 1979 on a Senate vote and received commission on July 24, 1979. Tidwell served as the chief judge for the Northern District of Georgia from 1996 to 1999 before later assuming senior status on October 8, 1999[1].
