Ernest C. Torres is a federal judge for the United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island. He joined the court in 1987 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan. Torres served as the chief judge of the court from 1999 to 2006 before assuming senior status on December 1, 2006. He retired from the court on June 1, 2011. Prior to joining the court, Torres was a private practice attorney in Rhode Island.[1]

Education

Torres graduated from Dartmouth College with his bachelor's degree in 1963 and later graduated from the Duke University School of Law with his law degree in 1968.[1]

Professional career

Torres spent the majority of his legal career as a private practice attorney licensed in the State of Rhode Island from 1968 to 1980. Also in addition to his private practice work, Torres served as a elected member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives from 1975 to 1980 and served as the Deputy Minority Leader from 1977 to 1980. Torres served as an Associate Justice of the Rhode Island Superior Court from 1980 to 1985. From 1985 to 1986, he was the Assistant Vice President in charge of national staff counsel for Aetna Life Insurance Company.[1]

Judicial career

Torres was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on June 22, 1987, to a seat vacated by Bruce Marshall Selya as Selya was nominated to the First Circuit Court of Appeals[1] Torres was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on November 5, 1987, and received commission on November 6, 1987. Torres served as the chief judge of the court from 1999 to 2006 before assuming senior status on December 1, 2006. He retired from the court on June 1, 2011.[1]
