Francis X. Spina is a justice on the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, the state's highest court. He was appointed to this position on October 14, 1999[1] and his term will expire in 2016 when he turns 70.

Biography

Justice Spina was born on November 13, 1946 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. He earned a B.A. degree from Amherst College and a J.D. degree from Boston College of Law.[1]

Legal career

Justice Spina began his legal career in 1972 working for Western Massachusetts Legal Services. He worked as an Assistant City Solicitor in the City of Pittsfield Law Department from 1975 to 1977. From 1979 to 1983, he was a Second Assistant District Attorney in Berkshire County. He then worked as a partner of the law firms Reder, Whalen, and Spina and Katz, Lapointe and Spina until 1993. He served on the Superior Court from 1993 to 1997. He served on the Massachusetts Appeals Court from 1997 to 1999 and was appointed as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Judicial Court on [[C1999#October|October 14, 1999].[1]

Notable opinions

Spina was one of three justices to dissent in the Goodridge v. Department of Public Health case, which legalized same-sex marriage in Massachusetts.
