R. Fred Lewis is an associate justice of the seven member Florida Supreme Court. He was first nominated to the court in the state's Commission-selection, political appointment method of judicial selection on December 7, 1998 by the late Governor Lawton Chiles and then Governor-elect Jeb Bush. Justice Lewis was retained in 2006 and 2012. Lewis served as Chief Justice of the court from 2006 until 2008. His current term expires in January of 2019.[1][2][3]
Education
Lewis earned his undergraduate degree cum laude from Florida Southern College in 1969 and his Juris Doctor cum laude from the University of Miami School of Law in 1972.[1]
Professional career
Lewis served in the U.S. Army ROTC program at the University of Miami, and after law school he attended the U.S. Army A.G. School. Lewis entered the private practice of law following his discharge from the Army. He began his career on the bench on January 1, 1999 when he was appointed to the Florida Supreme Court.[1]
