G. Mennen Williams

Gerhard Mennen Williams, also known as Soapy Williams, was a justice and Chief Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court. He was also the Democratic governor of Michigan for twelve years starting in 1948.
Williams was elected to the state's high court in 1970, winning election over an incumbent Republican justice. He served as the court's chief justice in 1983-1986. He left the court in 1987, when he was 76.
