G. Richard Johnson was the chancellor of the First Judicial District, serving Carter, Johnson, Unicoi, and Washington counties in Tennessee. He joined the court in 1988 and was re-elected in 2006 without opposition to a term which was to have ended in 2014. However, before his term could end, Johnson retired from the court on June 30, 2013.
Johnson received his undergraduate degree from East Tennessee State University in 1966 and his law degree from the University of Tennessee in 1969.
Johnson worked as a private practice lawyer prior to becoming a Chancellor in 1988.
