Gabriel W. Gorenstein is a federal magistrate judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. He was appointed to this position on March 2, 2001.[1]
Education
Judge Gorenstein was born in 1957 in New York City. He received his B.A. degree in Psychology from Yale University in 1979 and his J.D. degree from Columbia Law School in 1984.[2]
Career
Judge Gorenstein began his career in 1984 as a law clerk to U.S. Appellate Judge Spottswood Robinson of the District of Columbia. The following year, he joined the law firm of Debevoise & Plimpton. In 1987, he was appointed Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. There he served as the Chief of the Civil Rights Unit, then as the Chief Appellate Attorney for the U.S. Attorney. In 1994, he was appointed General Counsel and Deputy Commissioner of the New York City Human Resources Administration. Two years later, he became the Acting First Deputy Commissioner. He was sworn in as a New York City Criminal Court judge on May 22, 1998.[3]
