Gary L. Lumpkin is the presiding judge of the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals. He was first appointed to the bench November 15, 1988 by Republican Governor Henry Bellmon. Judge Lumpkin retained his seat by the voters of Oklahoma during the November 4, 2008 General Election.[1] He will be up for re-election in 2014, at the end of his 6-year term.

Legal Biography

Gary L. Lumpkin was born in Wichita Falls, Texas in the year 1946. His family eventually relocated to Sentinel, Oklahoma, where he graduated from Weatherford High School. After high school, Lumpkin attended Northwestern State College and later graduated from Southwestern State College in 1968 with a degree in Business Administration. After briefly considering pursuing an advanced business degree, Lumpkin instead earned a Juris Doctorate from the University of Oklahoma School of Law in 1974. Today, Lumpkin is married and has one child.

Legal career

Prior to his service on a judiciary, Gary L. Lumpkin served in U.S. Marine Corps from 1968-1971, including 18 months in Vietnam. Lumpkin currently holds the rank of Colonel in the Marine Corps Reserve. After his military service, he worked various jobs including the Oklahoma Department of Consumer Affairs and serving as an assistant district attorney.
