George H. King is the Chief Judge for the United States District Court for the Central District of California. He joined the court in 1995 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton. He became Chief Judge on October 1, 2012. [1][2]

Early life and education

A native of California, King graduated from the University of California-Los Angeles with his Bachelor's Degree in 1971 and later graduated from the University of Southern California Law School with his juris doctorate degree in 1974.[2]

Professional career

King began his legal career as a private practice attorney licensed in the State of California from 1974 to 1975 before joining theU.S. Attorney's Officeas the Assistant U.S. attorney for the Central District of California from 1975 to 1979. King resumed private practice work licensed in the State of California from 1979 to 1986 before becoming a hearing examiner for thee Los Angeles Police Commission from 1980 to 1982.[2]

Judicial career

Central District of California

King began his judicial career as a federal magistrate judge for the United States District Court for the Central District of California. King was appointed to a full eight year term as a Magistrate Judge in 1987 and served the entire full term till 1995 when he was elevated to federal judge.

On the recommendation of U.S. Senators Dianne Feinstien and Barbara Boxer, King was nominated by President Bill Clinton on April 27, 1995 to a new seat created by 104 Stat. 5089 which was approved by Congress. King was confirmed by the Senate on June 30, 1995 on a majority voice vote and received commission on June 30, 1995.[3][2]

Notable cases

Bus shutdown case

  United States District Court for the Central District of California
Judge King ordered Tierra Santa, an interstate bus transportation company to cease its operations on March 6, 2010. This came after the Federal Motor Carrier Administration ordered the company to stop operations after a tragic bus accident on March 5, 2010 in Arizona. According to federal authorities, the bus operator during that accident was operating illegally.[4]
