George Cressler Young is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida. He was reassigned to the court in 1966, five years after being nominated by President John F. Kennedy to serve on Florida's Northern and Southern district courts. Young is a judge serving on senior status. [1]
Early life and education
Born in 1916 in the State of Ohio, Young attended the University of Florida at Gainesville and graduated with both his Bachelor's and Juris Doctorate Degrees in 1938 and 1940. Young served four years in the US Navy in World War II from 1942 to 1946[1].
Professional career
Young served in private practice in the State of Florida from 1941 to 1942, 1947 to 1948, and 1951 to 1961. Young also served as a Administrative assistant to former Florida Congressman and U.S. Senator George Smathers from 1948 to 1951[1].
Judicial career
Middle District of Florida
Young was first nominated in the Northern District of Florida and Southern District of Florida by President John Kennedy on September 5, 1961 to a seat vacated by George Whitehurst as Whitehurst assumed senior status. Young was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on September 14, 1961 and received his commission on September 18, 1961.
In 1966, when the Middle District of Florida was created, Young was re-assigned on October 29, 1962. Young served as the Chief Judge of the court as the court's lead administrative officer from 1973 to 1981 before later assuming senior status on October 19, 1981.
