Gordon Shumaker

Gordon W. Shumaker (b. 1948) is a judge on the Minnesota Court of Appeals. He was originally appointed to this position by then-governor Arne Carlson on January 6, 1998 and was subsequently elected in 2000 and 2006.[1]

Biography

Judge Shumaker received his B.A. (English) and M.A. (Teaching) degrees from the University of St. Thomas in 1964 and 1965, respectively. He then earned his J.D. degree from the William Mitchell College of Law in 1971. Before entering into law practice, he worked for five years as a high school English teacher and track coach.[1]

Legal career

Judge Shumaker began his legal career on October 15, 1971 as an associate attorney of the law firm Meier, Kennedy, Quinn & Shumaker. He became a partner of the firm on January 1, 1980 and left on March 1, 1982 when he was appointed to the Minnesota District Court. From July 1, 1996 to December 31, 1997, he was the Chief Judge of this court. He then left to become an Appellate Judge. During his legal career, from 1976 to 2000, he worked as the Director of the Paralegal Program at Inver Hills Community College and an instructor in Litigation and Domestic Relations. He has also served on various law associations.[1]
