Ransey Guy Cole, Jr. (b. 1951) is a federal judge for the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. He joined the court in 1995 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton.
Early life and education
Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Cole graduated from Tufts University with his Bachelor's degree in 1972 and later from Yale Law School with his Juris Doctor degree in 1975.[1]
Legal career
Cole entered private practice in the State of Ohio from 1975 to 1978 before becoming a Trial Attorney in the Civil Division, Commercial Litigation Branch, of the U.S. Department of Justice from 1978 to 1980. Cole continued private practice thereafter until 1995.[1]
Judicial career
Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of Ohio
Cole began his federal judicial career as a U.S. Bankruptcy Judge for the Southern District of Ohio bankruptcy court. Cole was nominated by the Sixth Circuit Judicial Conference to a fourteen-year term as a Federal Bankruptcy Judge in 1987 and resigned in 1993.[1]
Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals
On the recommendation of U.S. Senator John Glenn, Cole was nominated by to the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit by President Bill Clinton on June 29, 1995 to a seat vacated by Nathaniel Jones. Cole was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on December 22, 1995 on a majority vote and received commission on December 26, 1995. [2]
