Harold Ackerman is a federal judge for the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey. He joined the court in 1979 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter. Ackerman served as a Senior Judge until his service was terminated on December 2nd, 2009 due to death.[1]

Early life and education

Born in Newark, New Jersey, Ackerman graduated from Rutgers University School of Law with a Bachelor of Laws, LL.B., degree in 1951.[1]

Professional career

Ackerman was a private practice attorney in the State of New Jersey from 1951 to 1954. Ackerman served as a Judge in the Compensation Court of the State of New Jersey from 1955 to 1965. Ackerman first served as a Judge in the in the Union County, New Jersey District Court from 1965 to 1970 before serving in the Court of Union County from 1970 to 1973. Ackerman was appointed to Judge of the New Jersey, Superior Court, Law Division from 1973 to 1975, and served as a Judge in the Superior Court's Chancery Division for General Equity, until 1979.[1]

Judicial career

District of New Jersey

On the recommendation of U.S. Senators Harrison A. Williams and Bill Bradley, Ackerman was nominated to the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey by President Jimmy Carter on September 28, 1979 to a seat vacated by George Barlow as Barlow assumed senior status. Ackerman was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on October 31, 1979, and received commission on November 2, 1979. Ackerman assumed senior status on February 15, 1994.[1] Ackerman was succeeded in this position by William Walls.
