There are three types of trial courts in Hawaii: the Circuit, Family and District Courts.
These trial courts are divided into four judicial districts which represent the four major islands: The First, Second, Third, and Fifth Circuit Courts (the Fourth Circuit was merged with the Third Circuit in 1943). There is a Circuit, Family and District Court in each of the four Circuits.
The Hawaii Circuit Courts are courts in Hawaii that have general jurisdiction in civil and criminal cases. They have exclusive jurisdiction in probate, guardianship and criminal felony cases. They also have exclusive jurisdiction in civil cases where the contested amount exceeds $25,000. The "Circuit Courts share concurrent jurisdiction with District Courts in civil non-jury cases in which the amounts in controversy are between $10,000 and $25,000." [1]
There are four circuits in the Hawaii Circuit Court system:
- O`ahu First Circuit Court, Hawaii
- Maui Second Circuit Court, Hawaii
- Hawai`i Third Circuit Court, Hawaii
- Kaua`i Fifth Circuit Court, Hawaii
