The Judicial Update

April 17, 2012

Hawaii: Hawaii civil affair news organization Civil Beat, released the 2011 and 2012 salary information for all 1,900 judiciary employees in a search able database on April 10th.[1]

The Civil Beat used Hawaii's Open Records Laws to obtain the names, positions, and salaries of all employees in the state judiciary. In their analysis, the Civil Beat found that Judges are the highest paid employees within the judiciary, with salaries ranging from $156,727 for Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald to $128,296 for the District Judges. At the same time, it was noted according to the National Center for State Courts that Hawaii ranked last of all 50 states on salaries for judges when adjusted for cost of living in 2011.[2]

In addition, about 70 percent of the court's $144 million budget is spent on payroll, which represents less than 3 percent of the entire state general budget fund.
