Help:Edit summary
From Judgepedia
|
An edit summary is a short description of the nature of an edit made by any Judgepedia contributors.
If you make changes to a page on Judgepedia, it is up to you whether or not to provide an edit summary. However, it is considered good manners in a collaborative enterprise. When you provide a short summary of your edit, it allows other contributors to see approximately what change you made to a page without having to read the entire page or study the page's Help:Edit history.
How to provide an edit summary
You can only provide an edit summary when you are in edit mode. When you are in edit mode, you'll see the summary function near the bottom of the page. It is right above the "save page" function. "Summary:" appears, followed by a blank box. It is in that blank box that you provide your edit summary. Once you hit "save page", your changes to the page are saved, and so is your edit summary (whatever you typed in the "summary" box).
Examples of summary edits
Typical summary edits might include:
- "Added a section on her ruling in Brown"
- "Added category tag"
The "minor edit" function
You'll notice a box under the Summary text box that says, "This is a minor edit". If you made a small edit to the page, it is a kindness to those who might be watching the page to click the "This is a minor edit" box.
Although it can be a question with different opinions as to what constitutes a "minor" edit, fixing typos, adding a citation, and so, are clear examples of minor edits.
