Horace Weldon Gilmore was a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. He joined the court in 1980 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter and served it until he passed away at the age of 91 on January 25, 2010. [1]

Early life and education

Gilmore graduated from Michigan with his Bachelor's degree in 1939 and later graduated from Michigan Law with his J.D. degree in 1942 and also served in the U.S. Naval Reserve as a Lieutenant from 1942 to 1946. [2]

Professional career

Gilmore began his legal career as a law clerk for Federal appeals judge Charles Simons in the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals from 1946 to 1947 before becoming a private practice attorney licensed in Michigan from 1947 to 1951 before becoming Special Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan from 1951 to 1952 before resuming private practice work in the State of Michigan from 1953 to 1954 and also served as a Member of the Michigan Board of Tax Appeals in 1954 before becoming Deputy Michigan Attorney General from 1954 to 1956 before becoming a Circuit Court Judge in the 3rd Judicial Circuit of Michigan from 1956 to 1980. Judicial career

Eastern District of Michigan

Gilmore was nominated by Jimmy Carter on May 22, 1980 to a seat vacated by Cornelia Kennedy as Kennedy was nominated to a judgeship on the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. Gilmore was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on June 18, 1980 and received commission on June 18, 1980 before assuming senior status on May 1, 1991. [2] Gilmore was succeeded in this position by John O'Meara.
