Howell Melton

Howell Melton is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida. He joined the court in 1977 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter. Melton is a judge serving on senior status. [1]
Early life and education
Melton graduated from the University of Florida with his Bachelor's Degree in 1943 and his Juris Doctorate in 1948. Melton served three years on active duty in World War II in the US Army from 1943 to 1946 and served in the Army Reserve JAG Corps from 1949 to 1953[1].
Legal career
Melton started his legal career as a private practice attorney in the State of Florida from 1948 to 1961. From 1959 to 1960, Melton was a part-time County attorney for St. John's County from 1959 to 1960 before being appointed Circuit Court judge in the 7th Judicial Circuit of Florida from 1961 to 1977[1].
Federal judicial career
On the unanimous recommendation of U.S. Senators Lawton Chiles and Richard Stone, Melton was nominated by President Jimmy Carter on March 29, 1977 to a seat vacated by Gerald Tjoflat. Melton was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on April 25, 1977 on a senate vote and received commission on April 26, 1977. Melton later assumed senior status on February 1, 1991.
