- Douglas Shapiro was appointed to the Michigan Third District Court of Appeals.

- David Hamilton of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana undergoes a full confirmation hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee as the first step in confirming President Obama's Nomination to the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. The Hearing is scheduled for 2:30 PM-ET/11:30 AM-PT with the hearing being presented on a live webcast through the Senate Judiciary Committee's Website

- April 3: Iowa Supreme Court in the matter of Varnum v. Brien upheld a 2007 District Court decision in Iowa ruling that Iowa's ban on gay marriage is ruled unconstitutional
- April 5: Warren Matthews retires from Alaska Supreme Court and Morgan Christen joins the court in his former seat.[1]

- Election for a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court contested between Chief Justice Shirley Abrahamson and Jefferson County Circuit Court judge Randy Koschnick.

- April 8: Missouri House of Representatives votes to approve Missouri House Joint Resolution 10 which would make substantial changes to the Missouri Plan on a 85-72 vote.
- April 9: Robert Klausner received commission as a judge on the United States District Court for the Central District of California.

- April 21:
- James Moran of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois passed away.
- Northern District of Illinois federal judge James Zagel will preside over the formal arraignment of impeached Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich in which the Governor is expected to enter a plea. The arriagnment is scheduled for 10:00 AM-CDT at the Everett Dirksen Courthouse in Downtown Chicago[2].
- April 27: The State of Iowa recognizes same sex-marriage legally after the April 3, 2009 Iowa Supreme Court decision of Varnum v. Brien.
- April 28: The Senate Foreign Affairs Committee held a confirmation hearing for former Yale Law Dean Harold Koh.

- Mark Pfeiffer was appointed to the Missouri Court of Appeals.
- May 1: Justice David Souter of the Supreme Court of the United States will announce his retirement effective at the end of June 2009.
- May 5: Robert Gettleman of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois assumed senior status.
- May 6:

- May 12: The Senate Foreign Affairs Committee voted to allow former Yale Law Dean Harold Koh face a confirmation vote in the United States Senate as State Department Legal Adviser.
- May 13: Kaye Hearn was elected to the South Carolina Supreme Court.
- May 15: New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine re-appoints Barry Albin to lifetime tenure on the New Jersey Supreme Court.

- May 31: George Kazen of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas assumed senior status.

- Carol Conboy was appointed to the New Hampshire Supreme Court.
- David Gilbertson was re-elected Chief Justice of the South Dakota Supreme Court.
- June 1: Henry Herlong of the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina assumed senior status.
- June 2: Judge Charles Clevert in the Eastern District of Wisconsin federal court rules in the case of Americans United for the Separation of Church and State v. Elmbrook School District that the Elmbrook (Elm Grove-Brookfield) School District can hold its graduation ceremony in a church.
- June 4: Andre Davis and David Hamilton were reported favorably by the Senate Judiciary Committee and advance to a full senate vote.
- June 5: Arkansas Court of Appeals judge Courtney Henry announces her run for the Arkansas Supreme Court in the 2010 election.

- Andrew Bogue died while serving on the United States District Court for the District of South Dakota.
- June 11: Gerard Lynch nominated to the Second Circuit Court of Appeals was reported favorably by the Senate Judiciary Committee and awaits a vote in the full senate for confirmation.

- Samuel Kent of the Southern District of Texas was impeached by the US House of Representatives on unanimous vote making him the first federal judge impeached since 1989.

- June 26: Barry Albin who was re-appointed by Jon Corzine to the New Jersey Supreme Court was confirmed by the New Jersey Senate giving him lifetime tenure with mandatory retirement at age 70.

- Southern District of New York federal judge Denny Chin sentences disgraced investment executive Berine Madoff to 150 years in Federal prison.

- Eastern District of Pennsylvania senior federal judge Ronald Buckwalter will sentence former Pennsylvania Senator Vincent Fuomo after being convicted on corruption in office.
- July 15: The Senate Judiciary Committee held the third day of confirmation hearings in regards to the confirmation of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court of the United States.
- July 15-17 Federal Magistrate Judges Association holds their 47th Annual Convention in Milwaukee.
- July 16:
- Paul Suttell took the oath of office to become the Rhode Island Supreme Court Chief Justice.
- The Senate Judiciary Committee held the final day of confirmation hearings in regards to the confirmation of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court of the United States.
- July 21: Guido Calabresi of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit assumes senior status.
- July 23: John Miller of the Iowa Court of Appeals will retire.
- July 28: The Senate Judiciary Committee will vote whether to advance Sonia Sotomayor to a full senate vote.
