Original cases in Iowa are heard by trial, or district, courts. The state's higher courts, the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals, only hear appeals from the lower courts.

Polk County, Iowa: Romonda Belcher-Ford has been appointed to a judgeship in Polk County, Iowa (District 5). She was selected by the Polk County district judges out of 20 other applicants and is the first African-American female judge to hold office in Iowa. The 42-year-old former assistant Polk County attorney claimed to be "truly elated" about the new position. She has worked in the County attorney's office for the past 15 years.[1]
