Irving Robert Kaufman (1910-1992) was a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. He joined the Second Circuit in 1961 after an appointment from John F. Kennedy. He joined the Southern District of New York in 1950 after an appointment from Harry Truman. At the time of his appointment, Kaufman was a private practice attorney in New York City. He assumed senior status on July 1, 1987, and served until his death on February 1, 1992. [1]

Judicial career

Second Circuit

Kaufman was nominated by President John F. Kennedy on September 14, 1961, to a new seat created by 75 Stat. 80; he was confirmed by the Senate on September 21, 1961, and received his commission on September 22nd. He served as chief judge from 1973-1980. He assumed senior status on July 1, 1987, and served until his death on February 1, 1992.[1] He was succeeded to this post by John Walker.

Southern District of New York

Kaufman received a recess appointment from President Harry Truman on October 21, 1949, to a new seat created by 63 Stat. 493; he was nominated on January 5, 1950, confirmed by the Senate on April 4, 1950, and received his commission on April 7th. He served until September 22, 1961, before advancing to the Second Circuit.[1] Kaufman was succeeded in this position by John Cannella.
