Judge throws out case against Detroit Public Schools
Judge Torres dismissed a case against the Detroit Public Schools involving illegally collected taxes in a three year period, according to Detroit Public Schools' website. Had Judge Torres ruled differently, the case could have had a potential cost of $80 million to the District. Although the District learned that its authority to levy mills on non-homestead property had expired three years prior, Judge Torres dismissed all claims.[3] The dispute stemmed from claims that the district "illegally collected $259 million in taxes from business and landlords from 2002 to 2004."[4]
