J. Robert "Bobby" Carter is a judge of the Shelby County Criminal Court in the Thirtieth Judicial District of Tennessee. He was elected to this position on August 5, 2010 to replace retired Judge John P. Colton. His current term expires in 2018.[1][2][3]
Education
Carter received two bachelor's degrees, in English and Humanities, from Christian Brothers College in Memphis in 1977. He then earned his J.D. degree from the University of Memphis in 1980.[1]
Career
Carter began his career as a private practice lawyer and a public defender for Shelby County, Tennessee. In 1985, he became an Assistant District Attorney General. He worked in that position until his judicial election in 2010.[1][4]
Court of Criminal Appeals nomination
Carter was selected by the Tennessee Judicial Nominating Commission as one of three candidates to replace the late Judge J.C. McLin, who passed away in September. Governor Bill Haslam interviewed Roger A. Page, J. Ross Dyer and J. Robert Carter, and selected Roger A. Page to fill the vacancy in December 2011.[5][6]
