Judge Jack S. Nordby

Jack S. Nordby was a Minnesota Fourth Judicial District judge for Hennepin County, Minnesota. He was appointed to this position in 1995 and was elected to full terms in 1996, 2002 and 2008. He was assigned to the Criminal division. He retired in March 2011.[1]

Ethics hearing

In January 2011, Nordby was tried by the Minnesota Board of Judicial Standards, regarding a trial with the courts-monitoring group WATCH. During the case in 2009, the judge made critical comments about the group. The prosecutor for the ethics board claimed that Nordby was attempting to draw the group into a fight, presumably over comments made by it about a colleague of his. Originally, the Board was set to give Nordby a public reprimand, but the judge wanted to fight it.[2]

Outcome of ethics charges

In May 2011, Nordby was cleared of charges by a three judge panel appointed by the Minnesota Supreme Court. The panel found that while the former judge did use strong language, he did not act unethically.[3]

Education

Nordby received his B.A. degree from Harvard College in 1964 and his LL.B. degree from Harvard Law School in 1967. He was also enrolled in the Post-Graduate English Department at the University of Minnesota in 1967 and 1968.[4]

Career

Judge Nordby began his legal career in 1965 as a private practice lawyer with the firm of Thomson, Wylde & Nordby. He then became a Rapoport for the firm of Wylde & Nordby in 1980. He worked for Meshbesher & Spence, Ltd. from 1985 to 1995, when he was appointed district judge.[4]
