James A. Beaty, Jr. is an Article III federal judge on senior status for the United States District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina. He joined the court in 1994 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton. Beaty was the Chief Judge of the court from 2006 to October 31, 2012. Beaty assumed senior status on June 30, 2014, after 19 years of service.
Early life and education
Born in Whitmire, South Carolina, Beaty graduated from Western Carolina University with his bachelor's degree in 1971 and later from the University of North Carolina School of Law in Chapel Hill, North Carolina with a Juris Doctor degree in 1974.
Middle District of North Carolina
Beaty was nominated to the United States District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina by President Bill Clinton on August 25, 1994 to a seat vacated by Richard Erwin. Beaty was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on October 7, 1994, on a voice vote and received commission on October 11, 1994. Beaty has served as the Chief Judge of the Court since 2006. Beaty assumed senior status on June 30, 2014.
