James Cacheris is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. He joined the court in 1981 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan.
Early life and education
Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Cacheris graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia with his Bachelor's Degree in 1955 before graduating from the George Washington University Law School with his Juris Doctor degree in 1960.[1]
Professional career
Cacheris worked as an Assistant Corporate Counsel in Washington, DC from 1960 to 1962 before serving as a private practice attorney licensed in Washington, DC and the Commonwealth of Virginia from 1962 to 1971. In 1971, Cacheris began his Judicial Career as a Circuit Court Judge in the 19th Judicial Circuit of Virginia Fairfax County from 1971 to 1981.[1]
Judicial career
Eastern District of Virginia
On the recommendation of Virginia U.S. Senator John Warner, Cacheris was nominated to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia by President Ronald Reagan on October 20, 1981 to a new seat created by 92 Stat. 1629, which was approved by Congress. Cacheris was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on November 24, 1981 on a senate vote and received commission on December 1, 1981. Cacheris served as the Chief Judge of the Court from 1991 to 1997 serving as the Court's lead judicial administrative officer in conjunction with the Clerk of Court.[1]
