James Hughes Hancock is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama. He joined the court in 1973 after being nominated by President Richard Nixon. Hancock is also a judge serving on senior status[1].

Early life and education

A native of Alabama, Hancock was a graduate of the University of Alabama-Tuscaloosa with his Bachelor's Degree in 1953 and his juris doctorate degree in 1957[1]. Hancock also served two years as an active duty US Army Lieutenant.

Professional career

Hancock started his legal career as a law clerk to former Alabama Supreme Court Justice John Goodwyn then spent his entire pre-judicial legal career as a private practice attorney in the State of Alabama from 1957 to 1973. [1]

Judicial career

Northern District of Alabama

Hancock was nominated by President Richard Nixon on March 20, 1973 to a seat vacated by Seybourn Lynne as Lynne went on senior status. Hancock was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on April 10, 1973 on a Senate vote and received commission on April 17, 1973. Hancock later assumed senior status on May 1, 1996[1]. Hancock was succeeded in this position by Inge Johnson.
