James Lawrence King is an Article III federal judge for United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida. He joined the court in 1970 after being nominated by President Richard Nixon. King is a judge serving on senior status.

Early life and education

King graduated from the University of Florida with his Bachelor's Degree in 1949 and with his juris doctorate degree in 1953. King served in the U.S. Air Force from 1953 to 1955.

Professional career

After military service, King became a private practice attorney licensed in the State of Florida from 1953 to 1964 and also served on the University of Florida Board of Regents in 1964. In 1964, King became a Circuit Court judge in Florida's 11th Judicial Circuit of until his appointment to the bench in 1970. On two occasions, King stepped in as an interim judge in the state's higher appeals courts first in 1965 when King was appointed by Florida Governor W. Haydon Burns as an Associate justice in the Florida Supreme Court in 1965 and was also asked by Governor Burns to serve as a Associate Appeals Judge in Florida's Third District Court of Appeals from 1966 to 1967.

King was nominated by President Richard Nixon on October 7, 1970, to a new judgeship created by 84 Stat. 294 which was approved by Congress.[2] King was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on October 13, 1970 and received commission on October 19, 1970. King served as chief judge of the court from 1984-1991 before later assuming senior status on December 20, 1992. King was succeeded in this position by Joan Lenard.
