James Lorenz is a federal judge in the United States District Court for the Southern District of California. He joined the court in 1999 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton. On October 25, 2009, he assumed senior status. [1]

Early life and education

A native Californian, Lorenz graduated from the University of California-Berkeley with his Bachelor's Degree in 1957 and later graduated from the California Western School of Law with his juris doctorate degree in 1965.

Professional career

Lorenz began his legal career as a Deputy district attorney for the San Diego County District Attorney's Office from 1966 to 1978. In 1978 Lorenz joined the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of California from 1978 to 1981. Lorenz served as the First assistant, U.S. Attorney from 1978-1980 and served as the Court appointed U.S. Attorney from 1980 to 1981. Lorenz served the remainder of his legal career as a private practice attorney licensed in the State of California from 1982 to 1999.

Judicial career

Southern District of California

On the recommendations of U.S. Senators Dianne Feinstien and Barbara Boxer, Lorenz was nominated by Bill Clinton on March 8, 1999 to a seat vacated by Rudi Brewster as Brewster assumed senior status. Lorenz was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on October 1, 1999 on a majority voice vote and received commission on October 2, 1999[2].
