James C. "Jim" Nelson (b. 1944) is an associate justice of the Montana Supreme Court. He has served in this position since May of 1993[1] when he was appointed by then-governor Marc Racicot, a Republican. He was retained by voters in 1994[2] and 1996[3] and he was re-elected in 2004[4]. His current term expires in 2012.

Biographical

Justice Nelson was born in Moscow, Idaho on February 20, 1944. He received a B.S. degree from the University of Idaho-Moscow, in 1966 and a J.D. degree from George Washington University in 1974. Prior to his legal career, he served as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1966-1969 and worked as a financial analyst with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. He is now married and has two children.[1]

Legal career

Justice Nelson was in private practice and serving as Glacier County Attorney at the time of his appointment to the Supreme Court in May, 1993.[1]
