James Carriger Paine was a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida. He joined the court in 1979 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter and served until his death in 2010. [1]

Early life and education

Paine graduated from the University of Florida-Gainesville with an Associate's Degree in 1943. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from the Columbia University School of Business in 1947 before graduating from the University of Virginia School of Law with his Juris Doctor degree in 1950. [2]

Judicial career

Southern District of Florida

Paine was nominated to the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida by President Jimmy Carter on July 12, 1979 to a new judgeship created by 92 Stat. 1629 which was approved by Congress. Paine was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on October 4, 1979, on a Senate vote and received his commission on October 5, 1979. Paine later assumed senior status on May 20, 1992. He continued to serve in that capacity until his death on March 7, 2010. [3] Paine was succeeded in this position by Daniel Hurley.
