James "Jim" Rice (b. 1957) is an associate justice of the Montana Supreme Court, a position to which he was appointed in 2001 by then-governor Judy Martz, a Republican.[1] He was retained by voters in 2002[2] and 2006[3] and his current term expires in 2014.

Biography

Rice was born on November 15, 1957 to U.S. Military parents stationed at Ramore Air Force Base. During college, he was involved with aviation and worked as a firefighter on a helitak quick response team for the Montana Dept. of Natural Resources and Conservation. He received a B.A. in Political Science from Montana State University in 1979, and a law degree from the University of Montana School of Law in 1982. He is now married and has three daughters.[1]

Legal career

Justice Rice worked as a legal intern at the offices of the Missoula City Attorney and the Lewis and Clark County Attorney. He then worked as a public defender in Lewis and Clark County for four years. He served three terms in the Montana House of Representatives. He was the Majority Whip in 1993. From 1985 to 2001, he was a partner in the firm of Jackson & Rice. [1]
