School laptop spying

Judge DuBois on Feburary 22, 2010, issued an order to the Lower Merion School District to stop using the cameras on school-issued MacBook computers to spy on students.

This came after Michael and Holly Robbins, the parents of Blake Robbins, sued the school district over a principal used the laptop camera to claim that the student committed improper behavior at his home.

As part of the order, attorneys for the school district were ordered to preserve all evidence used in the case.[3]

On April 5, 2010, Judge Dubois denied an attempt to block Carol Cafiero, the Technology Coordinator of the Lower Merion School District from facing a subpoena in order to testify in the trial. Attorneys for Cafiero insisted that she was trying to invoke her Fifth Amendment rights to not testify, but the judge differed in the ruling. The judge found no evidence Cafiero mentioned concerns of self-incrimination and said that she may have information about spying on the student's laptops that could determine the outcome of the trial.[4]
