Janice Holder

Janice M. Holder (b. 1949) is the Chief Justice of the Tennessee Supreme Court, a position to which she was elevated on September 2, 2008.[1] Holder originally joined the court in December 1996. Justice Holder is the first woman in the history of the Tennessee Supreme Court to serve as its chief justice. She has been re-elected to the court in 1998 and 2006 and her current term ends in 2014.[1]Holder is active in a variety of sports, and holds a black belt in karate.[2]
Legal education
Holder, a native of McDonald, Pennsylvania, attended Allegheny College from 1967-1968. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1971. In 1975, Justice Holder graduated from Duquesne University School of Law.
Legal experience
Upon graduating from law school, Justice Holder clerked for Judge Herbert Sorg, then Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania. From 1977 to 1990, Justice Holder was in private practice, and moved to Memphis. In 1990, she was elected to be Circuit Court Judge, Division II, Thirtieth Judicial District. In 1996, Holder was nominated to the Tennessee Supreme Court, and began her term there in December 1996.[3]
Justice Holder was editor of the Memphis Bar Forum from 1987 to 1991, chairman of the Tennessee Bar Association Commission on Women and Minorities from 1994 to 1996, and is a founding member of the Tennessee Lawyers' Association for Women.
