Janis Sammartino is a federal judge in the United States District Court for the Southern District of California. She joined the court in 2007 after being nominated by President George W. Bush.

Early life and education

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Sammartino graduated from Occidential with her Bachelor's Degree in 1972 and later from Notre Dame Law with her Juris Doctor, J.D., degree in 1975.[1]

Legal career

Sammartino was a law clerk for Indiana Superior Court Judge Douglas Seely for St. Joseph County from 1975 to 1976. Sammartino served as Deputy City Attorney for the San Diego City Attorney's Office from 1976 to 1994. Sammartino was appointed to Municipal Court Judge in the Municipal Court of San Diego from 1994 to 1995, and then served as Superior Court Judge for Superior Court of San Diego County from 1995 to 2007.[1]

Federal judicial career

Sammartino was nominated to United States District Court for the Southern District of California by President George W. Bush on March 19, 2007, to a seat vacated by Judith Keep. Sammartino was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on September 10, 2007 on a Se nate vote and received commission on September 21, 2007. [2]
