Barone began his career in 1974 as assistant counsel to the New York City Department of City Planning. In 1977, he became an associate of the law firm of Blanc & Spielberg. He then practiced with Moore, Berson, Lifflander & Mewhinney from 1979 to 1991. During this time, he was also an associate of Sankel & Abrams (1982), a law secretary for Harold Silverman (1982-1988) and an associate of Baker, Nelson & Williams (1989-1991). He became a sole practitioner in 1991.
Barone's judicial career began in 1992 when he joined the New York City Civil Court. He worked in this position through 2000, after which, he was elected to the supreme court. He has also served on the New York City Criminal Court.
