John Andrew Peters

John Andrew Peters (1864-1953) was the seventh federal judge in the United States District Court for the District of Maine. He was nominated to the court by President Warren G. Harding on October 25, 1921 to fill the seat vacated by Clarence Hale and served on the court until retirement on August 1, 1953.
The U.S. Senate confirmed him on November 14, 1921, and he was commissioned that same day. He served on the Court for 25 years.
Peters was a graduate of Bowdoin College. He studied law at the office of his cousin, Andrew Wiswell, who would later become Chief Justice of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. A former Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives, Peters served 5 terms in the U.S. Congress prior to his appointment to the Court.
