Early life and education
Peters was a graduate of Bowdoin College earning an A.B. in 1885 and an A.M. in 1888. He earned Read law recognition in 1887.[1]
Professional career
Peters studied law at the office of his cousin, Andrew Wiswell, who would later become Chief Justice of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. He began his law career in 1887 as a private practice attorney in Ellsworth ME, which he maintained until 1913. In 1896 he began civil service as a judge for the Municipal Court of Ellsworth and held the position for 12 years. He was elected to the Maine House of Representatives in 1909, 1911, and 1913 when he served as speaker. He then went on to serve in the U.S. House from 1913-1922, or 5 terms. [1]
Judicial Career
District of Maine
He was nominated to the court by President Warren G. Harding on October 25, 1921 to fill the seat vacated by Clarence Hale. The U.S. Senate confirmed him on November 14, 1921, and he was commissioned that same day. He served on the court for 25 years and assumed senior status on January 2, 1947. He retired on August 1, 1953 and passed away on August 22, 1953. He was succeeded in this position by John Clifford. [1]
