John Phil Gilbert is a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois. He joined the court in 1992 after being nominated by President George H.W. Bush.
Early life and education
Gilbert graduated from the University of Illinois-Champaign with his Bachelor's Degree in 1971 and from the University of Chicago-Law School in 1974 with his juris doctorate degree. [1]
Professional career
After law school, Gilbert went into private practice in Carobondale from 1974 to 1988. Outside of his private practice duties, Gilbert became an Special assistant attorney general for the Illinois Public Aid Enforcement Division from 1974 to 1975 and became Assistant city attorney for Carbondale from 1975 to 1978. Also for ten years from 1978 to 1988, Gilbert became a member of the Illinois State Elections Board, and served as the Chairman of the State Elections Board from 1981 to 1983 and became Vice Chairman from 1983 to 1985. From 1988 to 1992, Gilbert was elected by the People of Illinois a Circuit Court Judge for the First Judicial Circuit of Illinois and served one four year term before his appointment to the federal bench in 1992. Judicial career
Southern District of Illinois
On the recommendation of Congressman Henry Hyde, Gilbert was nominated by President George H.W. Bush on July 2, 1992 to a seat vacated by James Foreman. Gilbert was confirmed by the Senate on September 23, 1992, and received commission on September 24, 1992. Gilbert served as chief judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois from 1993 to 2000. [1]
