John Houston is a federal judge in the United States District Court for the Southern District of California. He joined the court in 2003 after being nominated by President George W. Bush.
Early life and education
A native of North Carolina, Houston graduated from North Carolina A & T State University with his Bachelor's Degree in 1974 and later graduated from the University of Miami at Coral Gables School of Law with his juris doctorate degree in 1977. Houston has served in the US Army since 1974 as a reservist from 1974 to 1978 and since 1981 along with three years of active duty on the JAG Corps from 1978 to 1981.
Professional career
After military service, Houston joined theU.S. Attorney's Officeand spent his entire pre-judicial career as a Federal attorney. First he became an Assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of California from 1981 to 1987 before becoming the Chief Prosecutor of the Asset Forfeiture Unit from 1987 to 1994 and as Senior counsel for asset forfeiture from 1994 to 1996. Houston served as the Senior financial litigation counsel from 1996 till his appointment to the Federal Bench in 1998

Houston was nominated by George W. Bush on May 1, 2003 to a new judgeship created by 116 Stat. 1758 which was approved by Congress. Houston was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on October 2, 2003 on a majority voice vote and received commission on October 7, 2003[1].
