Judicial career
First Circuit
Lowell was nominated to the United States Circuit Courts for the First Circuit by President Rutherford B. Hayes on December 16, 1878 to a seat vacated by George Foster Shepley . He was confirmed by the Senate on December 18, 1878, and received commission that same day. He served on this court until May 1, 1884 when he resigned. Lowell was succeeded in this position by LeBaron Bradford Colt.[1]
District of Massachusetts
Lowell was nominated to the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts by President Abraham Lincoln on March 11, 1865 to a seat vacated by Peleg Sprague. He was confirmed by the Senate on March 11, 1865, and received commission that same day. He served on this court until January 9, 1879 when he was elevated to the First Circuit. Lowell was succeeded in this position by Thomas Leverett Nelson.[1]
