John Marshall Harlan II (1899-1971) was a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the Supreme Court of the United States. He was nominated to each judgeship by President Eisenhower. He joined the Supreme Court in 1955 and the Second Circuit in 1954. At the time of appointment, Harlan was a private practice attorney and Chief counsel for the New York State Crime Commission. Harlan assumed senior status on September 23, 1971. His service ended with is death on December 29, 1971. [1]

Federal judicial career

Supreme Court

Justice Harlan was nominated to the Supreme Court by Dwight D. Eisenhower on January 10, 1955 to a seat vacated by Robert Jackson. He was confirmed by the Senate on March 16, 1955, and received his commission on March 17, 1955. Harlan assumed senior status on September 23, 1971. His service ended with is death on December 29, 1971. He was succeeded to this post by William Rehnquist.[1]

Second Circuit

Harlan was nominated by Dwight D. Eisenhower to the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit on January 13, 1954 to a seat vacated by Augustus Noble Hand . He was confirmed by the Senate on February 9, 1954, and received his commission on February 10, 1954. He ended his service on March 17, 1955, with his appointment to the Supreme Court. [1] He was succeeded to this post by Joseph Lumbard.
