John E. McDermott is a federal magistrate judge for the United States District Court for the Central District of California[1]. He was appointed to this position on July 02, 2009.[2]
Early life and education
Judge McDermott received his B.A. from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1968, and his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1971.[2]
Career
Judge McDermott started his career in 1972 as a staff attorney for the Western Center on Law and Poverty, Inc. He stayed there until 1981, and eventually became the Executive Director. In 1981, he left to become the Co-Managing Partner and Chairman of the litigation department at Memel, Jacobs, Pierno, Gersh & Ellsworth, where he stayed until 1987. After leaving, he became a Senior Litigation Partner at McDermott, Will & Emery until 1990. He then transferred to Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP in 1994, and served as a Senior Litigation Partner there until 1997. Later that year, he left to become a Senior Litigation Partner at Howrey LLP, where he stayed until his judicial appointment in 2009.[2]
