John Peter Barnes (1881-1959) was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
He was nominated by President Herbert Hoover on February 26, 1931 to a seat created by 46 Stat. 1417. He was confirmed by the Senate on March 2nd of that year, and received commission on March 4th. From 1948 to 1957, he was the chief judge. On September 15, 1957, he assumed senior status. He continued to serve in this capacity until December 31, 1958, when he resigned.[1] Barnes was succeeded in this position by Julius Miner.
