John Potter is a Federal Article III judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. He joined the court in 1982 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan. Potter is a judge serving on senior status.
Early life and education
Potter graduated from the University of Toledo with his Bachelor's degree in 1940 and later graduated from Michigan Law with his Juris Doctor degree in 1946. Potter also served in the U.S. Army on active duty in 1946 and in the reserves from 1946 to 1951.[1]
Professional career
Potter was a private practice attorney licensed in Ohio from 1947 to 1969 and was elected Mayor of Toledo from 1961 to 1967 before becoming Assistant Ohio Attorney General from 1968 to 1969 before becoming a State Appeals Judge on the Sixth Circuit Ohio Court of Appeals from 1969 to 1982.[1]

Potter was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on May 5, 1982 to a seat vacated by William Kernahan Thomas. Potter was confirmed by the Senate on June 18, 1982, and received commission on June 21, 1982 before later assuming senior status on August 1, 1992.[1]
