Jon McCalla is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Western District of Tennessee. He joined the court in 1992 after being nominated by President George H.W. Bush. McCalla is currently the Court's Chief Judge.
Early life and education
Born in Memphis, Tennessee, McCalla graduated with his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Tennessee in 1969. McCalla then served as an U.S. Army Lieutenant until 1971. McCalla went on to graduate from Vanderbilt Law School with his Juris Doctor degree in 1974.[1]
Professional career
McCalla was a law clerk for former federal judge Bailey Brown in the United States District Court for the Western District of Tennessee from 1974 to 1975. McCalla entered private practice in Memphis from 1975 to 1992. [1]
Judicial career
Western District of Tennessee
On the recommendation of Congressman Jimmy Quillen, McCalla was nominated to the United States District Court for the Western District of Tennessee by President George H.W. Bush on August 1, 1991, to a new seat created by 104 Stat. 5089, which was approved by Congress. McCalla was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on February 6, 1992 on a Senate vote and received commission on February 10, 1992.[2]
Reprimand
Judge McCalla was harshly reprimanded by the Sixth Circuit Judicial Council in 2001 for verbal and physical abuse towards practicing attorneys. McCalla was only one of seven federal judges to be formally disciplined in the 2000's.[3]
