Jose E. Martinez is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida. He joined the Court in 2002 after being nominated by President George W. Bush. Prior to his appointment, Martinez was a private practice attorney in Florida.[1]
Early life and education
Born in the Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Martinez graduated from the University of Miami in 1962 with his Bachelors of Business Administration degree. Martinez received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Miami in 1965.[1]
Professional career
Martinez was an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida U.S. Attorney's Office with the United States Department of Justice from 1968 to 1970. Martinez served as the Regional Director of the Office for Drug Abuse Law Enforcement with the United States Department of Justice from 1972 to 1974 and was also a private practice attorney in the State of Florida from 1970 until his appointment to the Federal Bench in 2002.[1]
Military service
Martinez served in the United States Navy Reserves from 1964 to 1993. Martinez clerked in private practice briefly in 1965 before serving as a Legal Officer in the United States Navy from 1965 to 1968. [1]
Judicial career
Southern District of Florida
Martinez was nominated to the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida by President George W. Bush on January 23, 2002 to a seat vacated by Edward Davis. Martinez was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on September 13, 2002 on a Senate vote and received commission on September 17, 2002.[2]
