Judge Schwab to retire

Yakim, Washington: Judge Michael E. Schwab, who is approaching his 65th birthday, announced on September 15, 2010 that he will retire from the Yakima County Superior Court at the end of 2010. He has served on this court since 1998 and his current term was set to expire in 2012. He is retiring so that he can enjoy the rest of his life with his family. "I'm very sad to think in terms of not doing this job any more, but I have to think about other considerations, the rest of my life," he said.

Judge Schwab is known for his commitment to juvenile justice. While assigned to the Juvenile Court, he encouraged the construction of a new juvenile detention center and courtroom complex. Regarding these facilities, he said, "I consider that to be one of the most important projects I worked on." Superior Court Judge Ruth Reukauf spoke for Schwab's character, saying that he "was truly concerned about everybody".

Gov. Gregoire must now appoint a replacement.
