Judicial selection in Minnesota
From Judgepedia
Judges in Minnesota are chosen by non-partisan election to six-year terms. Interim vacancies are filled differently based upon the level of court.[1]The Minnesota Commission on Judicial Selection is the body that accepts and reviews applications for vacancies in the judiciary for District Courts and the Workers’ Compensation Court of Appeals. They then make recommendations to the Governor, who makes an appointment.
Appellate courts
Vacancies on the Minnesota Supreme Court and Minnesota Court of Appeals that occur between elections are filled by gubernatorial appointment.
District courts
District court vacancies between general elections are filled by gubernatorial appointment after selection by a judicial selection commission.
