Judith A. Cowin is a justice on the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. In 1991, she was appointed an Associate Justice of the Massachusetts Superior Court where she served until Governor A. Paul Cellucci appointed her as an Associate Justice to the Supreme Judicial Court in October, 1999. Because appointments to the Massachusetts high court are permanent to age 70, Justice Cowin will retire in 2012.[1]

Biography

Justice Cowin was born on April 29, 1942 in Boston, Massachusetts. She received her undergraduate degree from Wellesley College and her J.D. degree from Harvard Law School. She is now married and has three grown children.[1]

Legal career

Justice Cowin began her legal career in 1971 as assistant legal counsel to the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health. The following year, she became legal counsel for the Office of the Chief Justice of the District Court Department. From 1979 to 1991, she worked as an Assistant District Attorney in Norfolk County and in 1980, she was a clinical field supervisor at Harvard Law School. She was appointed to the Superior Court in 1991 and to the Supreme Judicial Court in 1999.[1]

Notable opinions

Cowin was one of four justices to concur with the majority opinion in the Goodridge v. Department of Public Health case, which legalized same-sex marriage in Massachusetts.[2]
